The Training Committee was established in 2008 and is one of the core committees of the Ottawa Senior Pride Network.  Back then, a small group of LGBT seniors began offering LGBT Cultural Competency training to staff of agencies in seniors’ services.  These days, the training team has close to 20 volunteers and OSPN is able to offer training in French and English.

Many older LGBT seniors hide or deny their sexual orientation to avoid discrimination, hostility and exclusion.  Research has shown the LGBT seniors are far less likely to access services.  This can contribute to unhealthy aging, alienation, depression and low self esteem.

Social connection is also an important determinant of health.  Studies have clearly shown that the availability of culturally appropriate services can make the difference between successful aging at home and premature admission to higher levels of care for LGBT seniors.

OSPN’s volunteer trainers organize and run workshops and professional development for the staff and volunteers of senior-serving organizations like seniors’ centres, service agencies, palliative care services, residential care facilities, and homecare agencies.  If you would like to book a training session for your organization/agency, please send an email to
