The Social Spaces Committee organizes social events for the senior LGBT community. Since 2011 they have run a variety of events such as pub nights, self-defense courses, bowling, film nights, line-dancing classes, and the annual OSPN Holiday Party in December. In the summer of 2016, the Committee put together a team that participated in the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival!
By far, the most popular events are the Vintage Queers’ Dances that are organized three times a year. These are licensed events with a cash bar, music covering the period from the late 60’s to the early 90’s, and a free finger food buffet.
From the very beginning in May of 2012, the dances were wildly successful and within the first couple of years became sell-out events. Proceeds from the Vintage Queers’ Dances pay for promotion of OSPN, the cost of our web site, as well as project work of the other OSPN committees.
Each summer, members of the Social Spaces Committee organize OSPN’s participation in the Ottawa-Gatineau Pride festivities. They organize our contingent in the Pride Parade as well as our information booth in the Pride Community Fair.
Although OSPN events are organized for LGBT people 50+, younger friends and allies are always welcome. The Social Spaces Committee advertises their events on the OSPN website and Facebook page, and through the membership email distribution list.
